Fans of Major League Soccer will have had their eyes glued to a number of fixtures on decision day. One of them will not have been the New England Revolution’s visit to Chicago, a game with nothing to play for. Late goals from Dylan Borrero and Alex Monis saved the affair from finishing goalless, and that is now a rap on this season.

Bruce Arena dismissed the idea of playing youngsters in this final fixture to the media in the build-up. He stayed true to his word with a fairly experienced XI being sent out onto the field. Amongst those starters were Giacomi Vrioni and Nacho Gil. The former missed a bit of a sitter whereas the latter was the subject of some fierce marking.
Dylan Borrero wasn’t in from the start but the young, Colombian winger came on as a sub and made the difference. The 20-year-old drove in off the left-wing and played a one-two with fullback Brandon Bye before firing beyond Chris Brady.

The Revs’ goal in this one was quite something but Arena was being more level-headed about it. He said the following about the scorer Borrero, he’s “Got a long way to go though. He’s not fit at this level. He has to get physically stronger. He’s got to get mentally stronger as well, but he’s a player with talent and we’ve got to get it out of him next year and get him more responsible in senior matches.”

Attentions Turn to Next Year
This is the end of one year and allows Arena and co to prepare for the next one in New England. We have seen a number of personnel changes in the last 12 months, and that won’t be the end of it either. Signing Djordje Petrovic was an excellent piece of business from the club. On the other hand, Omar Gonzalez, Jozy Altidore and Sebastian Lletget plus others came in and failed to deliver.
Talking of Gonzalez in particular and his rare moments on the field have been calamitous more often than not. Regular mistakes have been his contribution to the Revolution this year. When asked about this after the game though, Arena didn’t seem to agree. “I’m not sure that’s a fair statement to make or fair to just use [Omar Gonzalez] as a scapegoat today, so I’m just going to kind of ignore that question.”

From Arena to defender DeJuan Jones, and the emphasis is on moving on from this season. “Dylan Borrero came on and scored a fantastic goal, so it was great. We had some good moments today and definitely a lot to build on, but we’ve still got to close out games.” The Revs certainly need to start holding onto leads as it became more and more comical.
Another interesting quote from Jones, this time on his future with the club, is as follows. “You never know what’s going to happen in football, but if I’m back here next year, I’ll be ready to go and ready to work. I definitely can continue to improve my game, so I’m looking forward to next year, for sure.”
Rewinding back to the game at hand and Arena wasn’t pulling any punches. “Well, that was the story of our season right there, that game. To walk off the field without three points is a crime.” This is the final Revolution article of this regular season, it sure has been a tough one!
